The Department of Mathematics

The Department of Mathematics and the Department of Physics constitute Faculty 8 of the University of Stuttgart. The Department consists of six institutes, 22 professors and numerous other academic and support staff members engaged in research and training.

Together with the University of Tübingen, the Department hosts the research training group GRK 1838 for doctoral students specializing in spectral theory and quantum dynamics. The Department is actively involved in the “Cluster of Excellence” Simulation Technology SimTech.

Studying Mathematics

Mathematics is one of the oldest subjects of human inquiry and at the same time an indispensable tool in modern society. A degree in mathematics trains structured and logical thinking and problem-solving skills which are directly transferable to a wide range of professions. Graduates in Mathematics find employment as academics, analysts, bankers, consultants, engineers, statisticians and teachers, among other occupations.

The Department offers courses at the bachelor's and master's level, including those for the education of teachers and for students studying engineering and science. Studying in Stuttgart
